About Capiz shells: These are made from the outer layer of a marine mollusk, whose scientific name is placuna placenta, also called the windowpane oyster. The Capiz shells from the Philippines are named as such because they were originally harvested from the shallow coastal waters near the city of Capiz, on the island of Panay. Once properly cleaned, these shells are naturally translucent, and when painted with a light inside, they create a particularly beautiful play of colors.
